You're an English soldier, and you and your troops have made the difficult ocean crossing. You've brought horses and carts and servants and soldiers and weapons. You've spent days riding across most of Ireland. Now here you are, after all that travel, ready for battle. Holy shit! How the heck are you going to get inside this place? I'd turn around and go the hell home.
