James Wallis on the Burren, during our hike to the cairn. As you can see, the fog was formidable. There was a stone obelisk we wanted to see, also marked from the road like the cairn. But this one required a much higher fence climb, followed by a dozen or more huge bulls and a sloping hillside that vanished up into fog without any sign of the obelisk or a trail. We decided against stumbling off into the fog looking for a rock that lay at an unknown distance and direction, even one the guidebook described as "the most famous standing stone in Ireland."
