En route to the Cliffs of Moher. I rented a car with my friend James Wallis, head of Hogshead Publishing; he published my roleplaying game Puppetland. We spent a few days after WarpCon tooling up the west of Ireland through a remarkable area shown above: the Burren. It's a huge stretch of land consisting largely of exposed limestone. Thousands of years ago it was fertile farmland, but people cut down all the trees and the soil ran off into the ocean. Now it's a treacherous, rocky no-man's-land with patches of soil and grass in crevices here and there. We saw quite a few cows out there, but that was about it. On a gloriously foggy day, it was a wonder to see. Visit Ireland in the winter--much more picturesque, I think, plus you miss the high tourist season.
