Check out those spikes! Ouch! I assume they're there to keep pigeons off. They're on top of the big sign, too, but you can't see them here. University Village is this big outdoor shopping center a couple blocks from my house. It used to be a little neighbood place with local boutiques, a hardware store, and so forth. Then some new owners got it and now it's a Yuppie mecca: Pottery Barn, Banana Republic, Gap, Barnes & Noble, Eddie Bauer, Restoration Hardware, Williams-Sonoma, and on and on, just like a thousand malls in a thousand other cities. I go there a lot to wander around; it's an interesting place, in a weird sort of way. When I went there to shoot pictures that day, I'd been snapping shots left and right the whole time. As soon as I got into the shopping center, though, it dried up. I think I took four or five pictures there altogether, after getting a dozen in the last two blocks. There were almost no good images there. It was amazing. I realized that everything was so intentional, so deliberate, that the chances of finding those juxtapositions I liked were slim, at best. Bleah. (The best time I've had at this shopping center was one night when the power was out. The place was deserted and dark; normally, all the lights are on all night. It was creepy and cool as hell.)
